Brad Sucks – CC Success Story

O Brad Sucks ξεκίνησε να διαθέτει την μουσική του από το 2001. Το 2003 διαθέτει το πρώτο του άλμπουμ “I don’t Know what I’m doing” μέσω του Ιντερνετ, όπως λέει ο ίδιος τα τραγούδια του ακούστηκαν στο MTV, βρέθηκαν σε καινούργια αυτοκίνητα και ενέπνευσαν εκατοντάδες remixes.

O Brad αφήνει δύο μηνύματα κάτω από την προσφορά για δωρεάν download της μουσικής του. Και τα δύο έχουν μεγάλη δόση αλήθειας και χιούμορ:

1.Title:Thank you “Thanks to the podcasters, remixers and bloggers who spread the word about my music. And of course thanks to everyone who paid for the music even though they didn’t have to”.

Ευχαριστώ τους podcasters, remixers* και bloggers που διέδωσαν την μουσική μου. Και φυσικά ευχαριστώ όλους αυτούς που πλήρωσαν για την μουσική μου, παρόλο που δεν ήταν απαραίτητο.

2. Title: Please Steal This Cd, “I’d appreciate it if you’d copy I Don’t Know What I’m Doing and share with your friends. High quality MP3s are also included on the CD if you’d like to send them around.”

Τίτλος: Παρακαλώ κλέψτε το CD μου.
Θα εκτιμούσα αν αντιγράφατε το “I don’t know what I’m doing” και το μοιραζόσασταν με τους φίλους σας. Υψηλής ποιότητας mp3 είναι διαθέσιμα στο CD αν θέλετε να τα μοιράσετε.

Ο Βrad Sucks, βρήκε την αναγνώριση της δουλειάς του μέσω το διαδικτύου, μπόρεσε όμως να ενισχύσει οικονομικά την εργασία του καθώς χρησιμοποίησε άδειες για την μουσική του όταν την χρησιμοποιούσαν για εμπορικούς σκοπούς!

Ο Βrad είναι o δημιουργός των ήχων του γνωστού open source instant messenger Pidgin.

Ενώ έχει ήδη κυκλοφορήσει στην ίδια λογική – free distribution – το δεύτερο του άλμπουμ “Out of It“.

Some thoughts:

A lot’s changed since I started putting music on the Internet way back in 2001. Artist-endorsed free downloads were shocking. Flexible pricing was still an untested novelty. It was rare to find source files from artists and sharing music wasn’t encouraged by new artists.

Recently I was asked if I’d do anything different this time around. Would I still give the music away for free? Would I still give away my source files? Would I still be easygoing about copyright? Surely I could pull back now and try to cash in.

And I honestly couldn’t imagine why I’d do things different. The only reason I, a dude who made an album by himself in a country basement, has had any sort of success is because people took it upon themselves to share my music with their friends. They remixed it, they used it in their videos, they played it on their podcasts, they included it in software and games and it took on a life of its own.

To sabotage that would be a huge, retarded mistake. Instead I’ll be grateful if Out of It worms around the world in even close to the same freaky way I Don’t Know What I’m Doing did and continues to.

Anyway, this is a long way of saying I love you Internets. Thanks for all your support and I hope you like Out of It. I’m going to bed, good night!
